deokjeokdo island - camping!

Last weekend was a long weekend for us here in Korea. We had Monday off. Obviously I had to take advantage of that and do something with my weekend. I went camping with my friend Clayton. We went to an island off the west coast from Incheon. It took us about an hour on a ferry ride to the island called deokjeokdo. The island is one of the biggest in the patch of islands, which it was surrounded by but it still wasn’t too big. It was so good to be on a boat on the water. I miss my lake at home! Korea has a lot of rivers but very few lakes and no one has boats here.

In the background you can see the city of Incheon.

We spent two nights on the island and got to explore a good amount of the island. Saturday morning when we arrived we were motivated and walked a ton. We walked along the shoreline till we arrived at a beach. The shoreline was very rocky and had a ton of big boulder rocks. We then headed up a mountain to a peak that overlooked the whole island. I was so annoyed getting up there at that point but it was worth it, the view was awesome! The rest of our day was spent walking around sappori beach (where we camped) and getting some ramen for dinner… there was no restaurants at the island so we kept it classy and became best friends with the guy at the family mart (7/11 type convenient store) where we bought all our food that weekend.

Clayton went hiking up on some big boulders along the shoreline... I preferred to stay safe by the water with the smaller boulders.

Hiking up the mountain... I was so tired and crabby at this point! Haha

We made it!

Sunday we spent the day exploring the rest of the island. We took a taxi up to the northwest tip of the island and saw the cool rocky beach. It was super fun to explore the beach. After a few hours of looking around that beach we decided to start walking back. On our way there was a bus load of people who stopped us and asked us where we were going. I told the guy I didn’t know and he said get in… so we did! It ended up being two families who were on vacation and were getting a tour of the island. They all spoke some English and one girl who was 11 years old was amazing at English. It was quite an adventure and very fun to meet them. They were so nice and fed us some snacks on the van ride around the island stopping at different locations to look around. The tour ended at sappori beach where they went clamming while the tide was still low. The mini vacation was so relaxed and fun. It was great to get away form the city for a long weekend and the weather we had couldn’t have been better.

At the rocky beach on the northwestern tip of the island.

Dried snails that you could find covering the rocks.

Clayton helped the families look for clams... they loved us!

Our camping spot on Sunday night. Clayton bought a tent here from a foreign teacher who was leaving… his tent just so happens to be pink. He told me that if anyone asks, we’re telling them it’s my tent. Haha.

The sunset on the yellow sea was awesome!
